A personal bank account in Türkiye as a foreigner: the document pack, the right branch and an interpreter beside you

Turkish banks are allowed to open accounts for foreigners, and many do — but each bank's appetite changes with nationality, residence status and the month's compliance mood. The documents are few: passport, a Turkish tax number, proof of a Turkish address, a Turkish mobile number and, increasingly, a residence permit. The difficulty is the order, the branch and the interview. We prepare all three and sit beside you with a sworn interpreter. The bank decides; you sign.

How it works

1

Profile and prerequisites

You tell us nationality, status (tourist, ikamet, work permit), purpose of the account and expected flows. We check that you have a tax number and an address record; if not, we obtain them with you first — same day in İstanbul in most cases.

2

Dated shortlist and pack

From our record of which banks opened accounts for which nationality in the last quarter, we name two or three branches, the documents each wants, and the questions their officers ask. You receive a one-page pack in your language.

3

Branch visit with interpreter

We book the visit where the branch allows, meet you there with a sworn interpreter, and stay through the interview and the contract. You sign; we explain each clause as it is signed.

4

Activation and follow-up

We track card delivery, help you activate mobile banking and set limits, and log the account's conditions (minimum balance, fees). If the first bank refuses, the second attempt in the same month is ₺3,000.

Typical cases

  • New arrival with a residence-permit application pending. Needs an account to pay rent and receive salary. Which banks accept the application document instead of the card, and which wait for the card.
  • Student with a student residence permit. Scholarship or family transfers from abroad; the bank asks for the enrolment certificate and the source of incoming funds.
  • Property buyer without residence. Needs an account to receive the purchase funds and obtain the DAB. Usually a limited account at a bank that works with the notary or the seller's bank.
  • Nationality on a bank's internal caution list. Two refusals already. The shortlist is narrower, the document pack heavier, and expectations must be realistic.
  • Retiree with foreign pension. Needs monthly SWIFT credits; the bank wants the pension award letter translated and the CRS self-certification done correctly.

What can go wrong

  • Walking into the wrong branch. The same bank opens in one district and refuses in another. The shortlist names branches, not banks.
  • Address record missing. No yerleşim yeri belgesi, no account at most banks. Register the address first; we show how.
  • Inconsistent answers. You say "tourist" and your documents say "working remotely for a foreign employer". The interview preparation is about telling the truth consistently, not about scripts.
  • Expecting the bank to explain its refusal. Banks are not obliged to give reasons. We log the refusal and move to the next branch rather than argue.
  • Someone offering to open the account "for you" with a power of attorney. Banks increasingly refuse accounts opened by proxy and may close them later. You go in person.

Questions

Can I open an account on a tourist visa, without a residence permit?

Some banks still do, usually a basic account with limited functions, and policies change monthly. Most banks now ask for a residence permit or at least an application document. We tell you the current position for your nationality on the day you ask, with the bank names, and we do not promise an outcome.

Do you choose the bank for me?

We shortlist from a dated record of recent openings by nationality and profile. You choose. We do not receive anything from any bank.

Is the interview difficult?

It is a conversation about who you are, why you need the account, where the money will come from and go to. Our preparation takes you through those four questions against your own documents so the answers are consistent. The interpreter translates faithfully; nothing is added.

What about e-Devlet, mobile banking and FAST limits after opening?

That is a separate short service, digital banking set-up, ₺1,500, or included if you order both at once.
